Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa locally called Pakhtunkhwa (literally “area of Pashtuns“) and formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province. Kyber Pakhtunkhuwa means “the area of Pashtuns”, local people call it Pakhtunkhwa only. Previously, its name was North – west Frontier province, and it has many other names too. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is present in North – west part of the country. In the west and south of it, FATA or federally administered Tribal areas are present. In north – east, it is bounded by Gilgit – Baltistan. In east Azad Kashmir is present and Islamabad and Punjab are located in South – east. Pashtun people are the main ethnic group in province, other than that Dards, Hindkowans, Gujjars and Chitralis also live here.

Pashto is the local language, which is spoken by the local people. Urdu is also spoken as second language, which is the national language of Pakistan. For official use, English is used, which is official language of the country. The capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the largest city of province is Peshawar. This city is known for its educational institutions and markets. It is also called the city of flowers, due to the natural beauty it holds.

Economic Overview

Economy of KPK is at the third place in the country, after Punjab and Sindh. It contributes 10.5% in the GDP of country. 11.9% people of the country are residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The dominating sector, in terms of economy, is forestry. It contributes 34.9% to 81% in this sector. Its recent share in the GDP of Pakistan is 10% an in mining its share is 20%.

Economic Sectors In Province

Agriculture sector is also important. The major cash crops are Maize, wheat, rice, Tobacco and sugar beat. Tobacco is grown in Sawabi, particularly. The province is also known for the production of fruits.

Recently, manufacturing sector has extended in Peshawar opening job opportunities for the locals. In terms of trade, almost all kinds of goods and products are traded in KPK. The markets of the province are famous all over the country. Industrial zones are established by the government, which have reduced the rate of unemployment in the province. Weapons and small arms are manufactured in small workshops throughout the province. However, government is taking action to stop the manufacturing of arms on large scale. Khyber Pakhtunkhaw is the largest marble producer in the country. It produces 78% of marble.


The province is known for its natural beauty as well. A lot of tourist activity can generate economic review for the country, but political unrest has made things worse in the past. But, now things are getting better and government is making new policies to attract tourists. Province is also known for tree plantation campaign now a day.  Khyber Pakhtunkhawa has a lot of natural resources, which can be used for generating huge reviews for the country, but proper planning and utilization of resources is the need of hour.
